Councillors have agreed Argyll and Bute Council’s top transport priorities aimed at promoting economic growth and social inclusion. The local priorities will be fed back to the Scottish Government to help inform their latest National Transport Strategy, NTS2. The Council has identified a number of transport priorities, matching many of those highlighted by residents of Argyll and Bute.

A report detailing the progress of a number of large scale projects across Argyll and Bute has been presented to Councillors. The Council’s Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee was this week (June 7) updated on major projects in Campbeltown, Helensburgh, Rothesay, Inveraray, Tarbert and Dunoon.

Hollywood blockbuster Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will premier at cinemas across the UK today (Wednesday) but did you know that part of the movie was filmed in Argyll and Bute?   Eagle-eyed fans of the movie will spot Glen Mallan Jetty at Loch Long, near Arrochar, when they go to see the film at the cinema over the coming weeks.  

A special meeting of Argyll and Bute Council’s Helensburgh and Lomond Area Committee has been re-scheduled to allow officers and councillors extra time to examine and consider more than 1300 responses to the Helensburgh Waterfront pre planning public consultation.

Progress being made to attract more people to live and work in Argyll and Bute has been described as “very encouraging” in a report to Councillors.

Argyll and Bute Council has been awarded the UK’s highest level of cyber security accreditation after independent assessors carried out thorough tests on computer systems. The Council has been given its Cyber Essentials Plus certificate, which confirms its commitment to protecting data against the most common internet-based threats to cyber security. These include hacking, phishing and password guessing.

Schools across Helensburgh and Lomond are teaming up with the Children’s University Scotland to try and encourage young people to take part in exciting learning activities outside school hours.   The scheme provides children with a ‘passport’ which enables them to collect credits and gain certificates while they learn.  

Argyll and Bute Council reaffirmed its commitment to help tackle poverty in the area, when members of the Policy and Resources Committee approved a new draft Anti-Poverty Strategy and Plan.   The strategy details the issues that we face, particularly with our geography, demographics and our economic size, and sets out a clear vision:  

A plan to improve facilities at Tarbert Harbour and attract more visitors to the village has been approved by Councillors. Members of the Council’s Policy and Resources committee today (May 24) gave the green light for the improvements, which will be delivered in four stages at a cost of just over £700,000.

Argyll and Bute Council’s Road Safety Team has joined forces with Scottish Biker Magazine to host an event in Inveraray this summer, aimed at providing motorcyclists with advice on how they can improve their riding on the road.   The Rider Development Day will take place on 15 July and is targeted at motorcyclists who have not taken any further training since passing their bike test.
