Sandra Cobain – Registrar for Bute

Started in Registration – July 2009

‘I have worked in Registration for 12 years, it was a complete change for me having worked for the council for the previous 20 years in Housing and Council Tax benefits. I love every aspect of my job from the joy of registering a new baby, to my ceremonies all over the island and beyond, even having married some friends and family members, to being able to help people in their darkest moments when they are registering the death of a loved one. I really enjoy helping couples make their day special whether it is helping them choose a Quaich or candles or having  a sand ceremony to bring two families together, it is their day, their way as we say. I have been involved in a ‘cloaking ceremony’ for a Game of Thrones themed wedding. I think I am the only person on the planet not to have watched it so my son helped me with my research!!’

Testimonials

We’d like to give huge appreciation to The Isle of Bute for making our wedding day very special. We’ve been visiting Bute for years and as soon as we decided to elope it was the only place for us.

Sandra and Samantha at Argyll and Bute Registrars supported us through the process with friendliness and ease from the beginning. They answered any questions quickly and encouraged us at each stage to have exactly what we wanted during the ceremony. We chose hand fasting, readings and songs that DJ Sandra organised for us. I didn’t know a registry office could provide such an intimate, personal experience but this more than delivered, especially in its stunning surroundings – on top of a hill looking out over Rothesay and the sea.

Planning our wedding was a little complicated as I was undergoing cancer treatment and didn’t know what dates would work alongside appointments. Samantha and Sandra reassured us that things would be able to be rearranged if need be. Their consideration and support through planning made the whole experience peaceful and exciting, when it could have been stressful and daunting.

We were able to organise everything on island, from my beautifully styled hair, Hair By Claire, stunning flowers, Flowers By Janine, and natural, care free photos by Paul Simpson. We also had an impromptu drink in Bute Yard who kindly gave us a goody bag full of merch and delicious gin. A few weeks after the wedding we even got a shout out on Bute Radio Station. Another highlight of all that the Isle of Bute, and its people, has to offer for important occasions.

We are now celebrating being happily married and being cancer free. Thank you so much to everyone for making the day extra special. We are looking forward to returning to Bute to celebrate our one year anniversary in June 2024.’
