Our Registrars

We love weddings (image of wedding on beach on Mull)

Andrew Penny – Registrar for Mull

Started in Registration – February 2011

Holds the Certificate of Proficiency in the Law and Practice of Registration (Scotland)

“I have been conducting weddings for over 8 years and still get much satisfaction and fulfilment from being part of a couple’s special day.  The weddings I enjoy the most are where the couple have chosen an unusual or more difficult to reach location.  It is great to work with the couple planning with them to ensure they will be able to have their dream wedding.  Many couples have been surprised by how flexible we are regarding locations, the best example being planning and conducting a wedding ceremony on Ben More.  All the Mull Registrars are also dog-lovers and very accommodating of four-legged friends to be in attendance at our weddings!!”

Testimonial

‘Our elopement wedding was the perfect fairytale dream. I felt like a princess, and we got to do a whisky quaich and hand-fasting. Could not have asked for more.

Veronica Macdougall – Homebased Registrar for Kilfinichen and Kilvickeon area of Mull

Started in Registration – 44 years ago

‘I have been privileged to be registrar in my island district for 44 years now and have seen young people grow up, go on to have children and am now registering their children’s children! There have been so many changes during those years and the most challenging for me was the council’s decision to computerise this district where, until just six years ago, everything was handwritten! At the same time I became authorised to officiate at civil ceremonies and enjoy the preparation of a unique ceremony and being part of a couple’s special day. Many of the couples still keep in touch and call in when they are back on the island.’

Travelling to Mull

By Road  – Travel to Oban

By Ferry – Caledonian Macbrayne

The Isle of Mull is a popular wedding destination on the west coast of Scotland due to the superb scenery, warm and welcoming island hospitality and not least because of its accessibility from the mainland and regular ferry service. An abundance of wildlife including otters, golden and white tailed eagles, minke whales and basking sharks, to name but a few, can be found on the island and around the coast

Tobermory, (Gaelic Tobar  Mhoire, meaning “Mary’s Well”), is the capital of the island with its coloured houses along the Main Street and legend has it that the wreck of a Spanish galleon, laden with gold, lies somewhere in the mud at the bottom of Tobermory Bay.

Mull Marriage Room

Our Registrars are based in the old Court House and Prison, built in 1862, on Breadalbane Street, Tobermory.  Couples can be married in the ceremony room here, which is in the Old Court Room and it still has lots of original features.  The room can comfortably accommodate up to 44 people and has stunning panoramic views over Tobermory Bay and the Sound of Mull, with the hills of Morvern and Ardnamurchan in the background.

If you want to include music in your ceremony we have a Bluetooth speaker available in the room. As well as wc facilities, an extra room is available for bridal parties, for use prior to the ceremony.  If the weather is fine, your ceremony can be held in the Registration Office grounds.  Ample car parking is available within the grounds.

NB:  The main ceremony room is upstairs in an old building and as such, please be aware that there is no lift access to it.  We can offer a ceremony in a smaller downstairs room for those with mobility issues.  This room can hold 8-10 people.

Of course, there are plenty of other scenic locations to hold your ceremony on Mull – from hotels, castles, beaches, lochs and waterfalls, our registrars have even climbed Beinn Mhòr to conduct a ceremony and ventured out of Tobermory Bay on a boat for a ceremony on water.

Our staff will be happy to provide information about different locations available for your ceremony to help make your day a very special occasion.

Iona

Iona lies off the west coast of Mull. Run by the National Trust for Scotland, it has many historical features alongside glorious white beaches and crystal clear waters.

You can travel to the island by getting the ferry from Oban to Mull, and then travelling to Fionnphort for the Iona service.

With its unchallenged peace and remarkable beauty, Iona is the perfect choice for your special day.

Coll

The Isle of Coll is located in the Inner Hebrides, a 2 hour 40 minute Caledonian MacBrayne Ferry journey from Oban. There is a plane service from Connel Airport on a Wednesday provided by Hebridean Air Services.

Coll is 13 miles long by 4 miles wide. The population is around 160 but increases significantly from April to September with the arrival of summer visitors, relatives and friends.

‘Looking for your dream, island-wedding? The Isle of Coll offers a stunning backdrop for you to create your extra-special wedding, whether you are looking for a more intimate occasion or a larger celebration.  Coll’s stunning beaches can be combined with the local registrar,  An Cridhe and local caterers to provide everything you need for a big celebration. The Coll Hotel, with its new extension and beautiful garden, is a wonderful venue for a more intimate wedding, and you can be sure to be treated to a memorable day. Ensuring you and your guests get the most out of their ‘Coll experience’, Tigh na Mara Guesthouse and the Coll Hotel both have wonderful accommodation and beautifully-kept gardens with outstanding views for that extra special wedding photo. Tigh na Mara cooks up a special wedding breakfast (scallops, anyone?) as well as prosecco on arrival for your guests, and will go that extra mile for honeymooners – no need to sail away the next day!   5* budget accommodation is available at Coll Bunkhouse, so there really is something for all tastes.’ (Information supplied by Explore Coll)

On the visit Coll website there is more information and photographs of the Island.
