Pinning of the Tartan

Tartan for pinning ceremony

Following the proclamation that they were now married, the pinning of the tartan would take place.

Each family would customize this, depending on whether the Party 2 or the Party 1 was being accepted into the other’s clan.

For instance, if the Party 2 were marrying into the Party 1’s clan, any member of the Party 1’s family would present the Party 2 with clan tartan. This might have been a rosette or a sash fashioned from their tartan. It would be fastened with the clan badge to the Party 2’s dress symbolically accepting her into the Party 1’s clan. Many times the Party 1 himself would pin on the rosette or sash. It can be quite emotional when the Party 1’s mother does the pinning.

Likewise, if the Party 1 is being accepted into the Party 2’s family, the roles are reversed.

Whichever way you would choose, this is one of the wedding ceremony customs that’s easy to incorporate in your wedding plans.
