Support for Landlords

Which departments are involved in supporting private landlords?

Support for private landlords largely consists of the Private Sector Settlement Officer and the Landlord Registration Team. These are two separate services, which operate within different departments of the Council.

The Private Sector Settlement Officer works within the Housing Strategy team and is available to give advice and provide support about your role as a landlord and any challenges you may face.

You can contact the Private Sector Settlement Officer using the details below:

The Landlord Registration Team are part of the Council’s Regulatory Services department and process your landlord registration applications as well as providing advice about all aspects of the landlord registration process.

I would like to see more positive reinforcement and support for Landlords. What is available?

We will continue to provide support to landlords through channels such as the Private Landlord Newsletter and Landlord Forums, the Private Landlord Advice Hub, and via e-mail from the Landlord Registration Team. This support will be tailored to topics of interest, based on the results of the recent landlord survey.

In addition to the support provided by the Private Landlord Support service and the Landlord Registration Team within the Council, there are also a number of other organisations who aim to support landlords.

For example, the Argyll & Bute Citizens Advice Bureau are happy to provide free, impartial advice to landlords with any issues they may be facing.

The local Home Energy Scotland team also are happy to support landlords with free advice around home energy improvements.

Landlord Accreditation Scotland (LAS) is the national accreditation scheme for landlords and letting agents. Membership of LAS is free and enables you to access discounted rates for training. Membership also allows you to access support from LAS. If you are interested in taking part in any of the courses that LAS offer, please get in touch with privatelandlordsupport@argyll-bute.gov.uk to discuss how we may be able to support you with this.

The Scottish Association of Landlords (SAL) is the largest dedicated national organisation that represents landlords and letting agents throughout Scotland. SAL support and represent their members’ interests through providing resources and assistance, as well as delivering lobbying and campaigning work. Membership of SAL is available for an annual fee and entitles you to access their comprehensive resources and benefits.

While this list is not exhaustive, it is an indication of the support available for landlords at this time. For tailored advice and signposting, please contact privatelandlordsupport@argyll-bute.gov.uk.

Would it be possible to provide support for landlords, in the form of ‘basic’ information and/or easy to understand summaries around our responsibilities?

We are currently in the process of reviewing the information on our website, which will incorporate useful and up-to-date information and summaries for landlords. In addition, we have recently launched a Private Landlord Newsletter and Private Landlord Advice Hub, where we will continue to provide information about topics of interest. For example, in our May 2025 newsletter a brief summary of the recent changes to the Repairing Standard was provided.

In addition, the MyGov.Scot website has useful information about your responsibilities as a landlord

We are happy to take suggestions for items which would be helpful to include on the website or in the newsletter. Please contact us at privatelandlordsupport@argyll-bute.gov.uk with any suggestions.

I am considering selling my rental property – what support is available for me?

If you are considering selling your rental property and would like support, please get in touch with us directly at privatelandlordsupport@argyll-bute.gov.uk as we can tailor the support to your circumstances.

We can offer assistance such as providing information about the Argyll & Bute Buy Back Initiative or looking at alternative options to overcome any challenges you are facing as a landlord.

It is important to remain up to date with any changes to legal requirements which affect you as a landlord. We will aim to communicate relevant information about legislative changes through channels such as the Private Landlord Newsletter and Landlord Forums, the Private Landlord Advice Hub, and via e-mail from the Landlord Registration Team.

If you would like to discuss the effects of specific legislation on your position as a landlord, please contact privatelandlordsupport@argyll-bute.gov.uk.

Please answer the following about your experience using this website, not about the service you received from the organisation
