Short term lets
What is the difference between the support for registration of long term lets and short term lets, and is there a co-ordinated approach to both?
In Scotland, private landlords are legally required to register with their local authority through the Scottish Landlord Register. This requirement is mandated by Part 8 of the Antisocial Behaviour etc. (Scotland) Act 2004. For further information on long term residential lets registration, please contact the Landlord Registration Team.
The Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 (Licensing of Short-term Lets) Order 2022 requires short-term let hosts in Scotland to obtain a license from their local council. For further information on short-term lets registration, please contact the Short Term Lets team.
The two processes differ in terms of their legislative requirements, and as such the process for the registration of long term residential lets and short-term lets is entirely separate and dealt with by different departments within the Council.
I am considering changing my short term let property to a private residential tenancy. What support is available for me?

I believe that there should be a restriction on the number of Short-Term Lets in the Argyll and Bute area, considering the housing emergency. What can I do?
The Council are undertaking preliminary work to explore the option to introduce short-term let planning control areas. The legislation that governs this process sets out a statutory process which the Council will follow, and this will involve public consultation where you will be able to put forward your thoughts to assist the Council in delivering a suitable policy for the area.
