The design stage for the proposed 20mph speed limits across Helensburgh and Lomond is now complete – an important milestone for the first stage of Project 20.
Argyll and Bute Council expressed thanks to elected members, community councils, emergency services and local service providers whose input has helped develop the proposals which have been fully assessed and are ready for implementation.
Project 20 forms part of a national road safety initiative, funded by Transport Scotland, aimed at creating safer streets and supporting active travel by reducing speeds in some roads to 20mph. Lower vehicle speeds can help reduce both the likelihood and severity of road traffic collisions, particularly in built-up areas with higher numbers of pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users.
The next steps in the project include:
- Publishing information on the Council website, including a map of the areas affected by the change to the speed limit;
- Displaying on-street notices in the areas where changes will come into effect; and
- Installing new signage to alert drivers that they are entering 20mph zones. .
Once the new signage is in place, the new speed limits become legally enforceable by Police Scotland.
The measures will be monitored and reviewed to assess their effectiveness and inform future phases of Project 20.

Suggestions from partners such as the community councils and Police Scotland have been vital in forming our development of the project in Helensburgh and Lomond. I would encourage people to check the website if you can to see where the 20mph limits will be introduced.
“There will be a lead-in time as we prepare for Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders to be produced, and signage to go up. Look out for the on-street notices and keep an eye on social media and your local paper. We will be providing more information as we get closer to the ‘go live’ date.
