Update two: 2 September 2026

The design stage for the proposed 20mph speed limits across Helensburgh and Lomond is now complete – an important milestone for the first stage of Project 20.

We would like to thank community councils, emergency services and local service providers whose input has helped develop the proposals which have been fully assessed and are ready for implementation. Suggestions from partners such as the community councils and Police Scotland have been vital in forming our development of the project in Helensburgh and Lomond.

Project 20 forms part of a national road safety initiative, funded by Transport Scotland, aimed at creating safer streets and supporting active travel by reducing speeds in some roads to 20mph. Lower vehicle speeds can help reduce both the likelihood and severity of road traffic collisions, particularly in built-up areas with higher numbers of pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users.

The next steps in the project include:

Displaying on-street notices in the areas where changes will come into effect; and
Installing new signage to alert drivers that they are entering 20mph zones. .

Once the new signage is in place, the new speed limits become legally enforceable by Police Scotland.

To see which roads are proposed as 20mph, and which are not, please click on the icon circled which presents the legend detailing speed limits allocated to streets. You are able to zoom into the map to view individual streets. Please note, it best to view one layer at a time.

There will be a lead-in time as we prepare for Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders to be produced, and signage to go up. Look out for the on-street notices and keep an eye on social media and your local paper. We will be providing more information as we get closer to the ‘go live’ date.

The measures will be monitored and reviewed to assess their effectiveness and inform future phases of Project 20.

Update one: 20 March 2026

On 2 March 2026, we hosted an engagement event at the Helensburgh Civic Centre for elected members and Community Council representatives as part of Project 20. During the session, we presented the outline speed review proposals for the Helensburgh and Lomond area, providing an overview of the existing position and the proposed changes.

The event was well attended, with very positive engagement and. We collected a wide range of constructive comments shared both during and after the event. These will help inform the ongoing development of the proposals.

We will continue to accept further feedback through elected members or Community Council representatives until the end of the March. As this period closes, we will move forward to the next phase of the project, which involves preparing the Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTROs) and engaging formally with our key consultees, including Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and local bus and service providers.
