With Lochgilphead Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS) now complete, residents and visitors to the town are being asked for their views on what difference the improvements have made to life and business in the area.
These views will help measure the impact of the regeneration scheme and identify lesson to take forward to future scheme.
The Lochgilphead CARS is an ambitious £2.3 million heritage-led project, jointly funded by Argyll and Bute Council and Historic Environment Scotland (HES), along with contributions from building owners. The project has helped to revitalise six of the town’s historic buildings while promoting traditional skills and involving the community.
The priority buildings that were repaired and conserved through Lochgilphead CARS were:
- 1 Argyll Street
- 2-4 Argyll Street
- 6-10 Argyll Street
- 15-19 Argyll Street
- 3-17 Colchester Square
- Tigh Mhicleoid, Colchester Square
In addition, three significant shopfront improvement projects were completed, alongside a number of Small Repair Grant projects and numerous small scale shopfront improvements. All the works significantly improved the historic fabric and appearance of Lochgilphead town centre. Councillor Math Campbell-Sturgess, Policy Lead for Business Development, said: “CARS funding has made a a significant difference to our town centres, including – Helensburgh, Campbeltown, Dunoon and Rothesay, and now Lochgilphead.
“It has been wonderful to see buildings that play such an important role in the day-to-day life of the wider Mid Argyll community brought back to their former splendour and making Lochgilphead more attractive to visitors and a source of pride for its community. Well done to everyone involved – construction workers, business owners and residents – for their input and patience.”
