Play parks in and around Dunoon will benefit from a £100,000 share of £938,000 of funding, allocated to Argyll and Bute, by the Scottish Government.
Sandbank has been allocated £35,000, Glen Morag £40,000 and Dunoon Skatepark £25,000. In addition, Sandbank Community Trust has raised a further £10,000, with a further £5000 expected from another source, to add to the pot. Dunoon Community Council has raised £1000 towards a picnic bench for the Glen Morag play park.
With the additional funding secured, the Council will now go to tender for a contractor to supply and fit the equipment for the two play parks. Plans for the skatepark’s refurbishment will be made later.
The Council worked closely with the community to ensure the equipment meets with the needs of the children and young people who will use it. It has been chosen to promote health and wellbeing, as well as simply have to fun.
The Scottish Government funding allows for old equipment removed, some refurbished and some replaced. However, the additional funding raised for Sandbank means that there are hopes to create a signature piece of equipment that will act as a centrepiece to the park.
Both parks will benefit from renewed groundwork, while Glen Morag will benefit from a wheelchair accessible roundabout.
Councillor John Armour, Policy Lead for Roads, Transport and Amenity Services, said: “I’m really pleased to see the preparations begin for the play park refurbishments, which I know will be welcomed by local families.
“The input from the community throughout the consultation and commissioning processes shows just how important the wellbeing of the younger members of town is. What we will have, very soon, are places where they can meet up with their friends, have fun on new equipment and enjoy Dunoon’s good, fresh air.”
