Primary five pupils at Rhu Primary School, determined to make a difference have written to the Prime Minister and MSPs, urging action to ensure fairness and equality for children across Scotland and the UK.
As part of their learning, the class explored what child poverty, means and the impact it has on families. One pupil, Isla, had the chance to read her letter directly to the Prime Minister and received a recorded reply and personal letter. In his message, Keir Starmer thanked Isla and said he shared her determination that ‘no child should grow up in poverty, adding that every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential.’
Councillor Kieron Green, Policy Lead for Education at Argyll and Bute Council, praised the pupils’ efforts:
“It’s fantastic to see children at Rhu Primary acting on important social issues like child poverty. You should be really proud of yourselves for asking what action is being taken to help children from across the UK. Well done to Isla for receiving a personal response from the Prime Minister.”
The pupils’ campaign reflects Argyll and Bute Council’s own commitment to tackling child poverty and inequality. Through its Education Strategy, the Children and Young People’s Service Plan and ongoing work with the Child Poverty Action Group, the council is working to ensure every child in Argyll and Bute has the opportunity to thrive.
Working closely with partners such as NHS Highland, the council is addressing the unique challenges faced by families in remote, rural and island communities—where higher costs for essentials like fuel, food and transport can increase the risk of poverty. Initiatives include:
- Expanding access to free school meals and clothing grants
- Supporting families with cost-of-living advice and benefits guidance
- Investing in digital inclusion and transport solutions to reduce barriers
Councillor Green added:
“Tackling poverty is a shared responsibility. By acting locally and working in partnership, we can make a real difference for children and families across Argyll and Bute.”
