Argyll and Bute Council’s waste and recycling collection services are provided to almost every household in Argyll and Bute. We frequently review these services to make sure that they continue to provide value for money for our householders.
One of the challenges that we face is in making sure that the correct bins are emptied from the correct properties. This can be due to a number of issues such as remote properties, or the historic layouts of our towns or villages. One of the ways we can improve this is to ask residents to clearly mark their bins with their address details.
Please add the following information to the back of your bin, underneath the handles:
- Your house name or number
- Your street or road name
Many residents already do this – thank you. We now need all households to take part.
Collections often happen early in the morning, especially in winter when it’s still dark. Please make sure markings are large enough to be easily seen from a distance. If you choose to use stickers, we recommend a minimum size of A5.
We normally collect one green bin per household.
Some homes may qualify for a second green bin. You can check eligibility and apply on our website.
Councillor John Armour, Policy Lead for Roads, Transport and Amenity Services, said: “Many residents already label their bins, and we thank you for that. It’s important that every household now follows suit. It helps ensure we collect the correct bins and that you get the right bin back home.
“Climate change and new waste legislation mean we all need to recycle as much as we can. Where kerbside glass collections aren’t available, please use your local recycling point. And don’t forget – additional blue recycling bins are free to order.”
Research shows that around 52% of what goes into general rubbish bins could have been recycled.
Processing a tonne of black bag waste costs over £100 more than processing a tonne of recycling. By recycling more, we protect the environment and help support essential council services.
We are grateful to everyone who already recycles and encourage all residents to keep going—or do even more—to help Argyll and Bute meet national requirements and reduce black bag waste.
