Why have I been sent a letter?
Argyll and Bute Council is reviewing all their Single Person Discount awards to ensure that discounts are correctly awarded and that Council Tax records remain accurate.
To assist with this process, Argyll and Bute Council has appointed Liberata to carry out a review of Single Person Discount awards on its behalf. Liberata is authorised to contact residents and collect information with this review.
As part of this review, information held on Council Tax records may be compared against information obtained from credit reference agencies. This information can sometimes indicate who may be living at an address. However, this information is not always accurate or up to date. For example:
- Changes in household occupancy may not have been reported to the Council.
- Previous occupants may still have credit activity or correspondence linked to an address.
- Customer may use different variations of their name such as middle names.
- Information held by external data suppliers may be incorrect.
For this reason, we are writing to customers receiving a Single Person Discount to confirm that the information the Council holds is correct and that discounts continue to be awarded only to those entitled to receive them.

More about the Single Person's Discount review
Argyll and Bute Council is continuing to review discounts which will help identify fraudulent claims among Council Tax payers who are attempting to cheat the system. Each year local authorities nationwide receive a high volume of applications for Single person's discount. Sadly some of these applications are not genuine and just like benefit cheats; these people are claiming reductions in their bills falsely. Legislation exists which allows Council Tax cheats to be prosecuted in the same way that benefit cheats are; through the court system and made to pay back the money they owe. Checks will be made to ensure everyone who claims the discount is genuine. However, occasionally circumstances may not be so easy to explain. To help in these situations we have included the most frequently asked questions that can arise throughout this review period.
