Keeping our roads moving during winter weather

The council is responsible for 1400 miles of local roads in Argyll and Bute with BEAR Scotland maintaining the trunk roads (A82, A83, A85 and A828) on behalf of Transport Scotland.

Daily weather forecast and road treatment plans >

Each day during the winter months, our roads teams update the website with the weather forecast and plans for any road treatments needed over the next 24 hours.

Gritting routes and grit bin locations >

The winter maintenance routes are determined in order of priority, with resources focussed on the roads which carry the greatest amount of traffic. Our roads team works diligently to this strict programme.

Unless in an emergency it is highly unlikely that roads other than those shown on the map will be gritted.

The priority of gritting roads and footpaths is determined by our Winter Service Policy - Section 4 (Priorities).

The allocation of grit bins and grit heaps is determined by our Winter Service Policy - Section 8 (Salt and Grit)

Contacting us about winter roads problems

Our winter maintenance request form can be used to request road or pavement gritting, snow clearance, and grit bins and heaps, but please be aware that we treat roads and pavements in a strict order of priority e.g. routes to hospitals. Unless there is an emergency situation it is highly unlikely that non priority roads and pathways will be treated.

Additional grit bins and heaps are not ordinarily supplied due to the limited capacity to refill these but we may be able to place grit heaps in isolated rural locations (steep hills and bends) which become problematic.
