Tree Preservation Orders

Just like Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas, certain trees (both single specimens and collectively as coppice, belt, or woodland), can greatly contribute to our environment and be valuable assets. Tree Preservation Orders (TPO) are served by the council to protect individual and groups of trees which are considered of sufficient merit to warrant formal protection either for their contribution to the setting of the landscape/ built environment or where the tree itself is considered to be of interest either as an example of its species or of local / historic interest.

The felling, lopping, topping or removal of a protected tree requires prior permission from the council, except in situations where there is an immediate danger to public safety if such works are not carried out.

Anyone can request that the council serves a new Tree Preservation Order - such requests must be made in writing to the relevant area planning office, and will be subject to assessment by officers before a decision on whether to serve an order is made.

Please note that anyone proposing to do work on trees in a Conservation Area, which are not already covered by a TPO, are required to give the Council 6 weeks notice of their intention to carry out the works.

You must not carry out works without permission – if you do you could be fined in the same way as when contravening the TPO legislation. Conditions may be applied to the consent to do treeworks.
