New Gaelic Language Plan supports communities, culture and future generations

From community events and cultural activities to education and public services, a new Gaelic Language Plan will help create more opportunities for people across Argyll and Bute to connect with Gaelic in their everyday lives.

The Plan for 2027-2032 sets out a shared commitment to support, strengthen and celebrate Gaelic, helping the language continue to flourish in communities across the area and remain an important part of Argyll and Bute's identity, culture and heritage.

Through actions supporting education, community groups, cultural activities, events and public services, Argyll and Bute Council’s Gaelic Plan aims to increase opportunities for people of all ages to see, hear, learn and use Gaelic in everyday life.

Developed with the support of local communities, organisations and Gaelic stakeholders, it builds on the success of previous Gaelic Language Plans and reflects the important role Gaelic continues to play in the life of Argyll and Bute.

The Council shaped the Plan through extensive engagement with communities and stakeholders, including a six-week public consultation.

Councillor Luna Martin, Policy Lead for Climate Change, Biodiversity and Gaelic, said:

"Gaelic is woven into the story of Argyll and Bute. It can be seen in our place names, heard in our communities and celebrated through our culture, education and events. This new Plan is about creating more opportunities for people to experience, learn and use Gaelic in ways that are meaningful to them.

"We are grateful to everyone who took the time to share their views during the consultation. Your ideas and enthusiasm have helped shape a Plan that reflects the ambitions of our communities and our shared commitment to Gaelic's future. With your help, we can help ensure Gaelic remains a living, thriving language for generations to come.”

The Council will continue to work closely with communities, Gaelic organisations and partner agencies to deliver the Plan's objectives over the next five years. This includes supporting Gaelic learning opportunities, cultural activities and community events, while helping to create more opportunities for people to connect with the language in their daily lives.
