Argyll and Bute Harbour Board has welcomed proposals to secure the long-term future of Carradale Harbour, with plans that will protect vital infrastructure, support local businesses and create new opportunities for harbour users.
Carradale Harbour is an important asset for the Kintyre community, supporting commercial fishing, leisure activities and the wider local economy. Recent inspections confirmed that many key harbour facilities remain in good condition, including harbour lighting, safety equipment and navigation systems. The proposed strategy will now focus on investigating and addressing structural issues to ensure the harbour remains safe, resilient and fit for the future.
The phased approach includes specialist surveys, technical options appraisal, detailed engineering design and, subject to funding, the delivery of improvement works. This will help identify the most effective and sustainable solutions for maintaining the harbour's infrastructure and reducing future maintenance requirements.
The strategy also supports future development opportunities. Positive discussions with aquaculture company Mowi have led to agreement in principle on plans for new marine infrastructure, including a harbour pontoon for personnel craft that will also be available for use by local small boat owners. Proposed arrangements include shared investment and maintenance plans, as well as participation from local user groups.
Councillor Ross Moreland, chair of the Harbour Board, said: “We have a strategy of planned development and improvements, alongside partnership working with Mowi. This combination offers a foundation for future sustainable use of the Harbour. The proposals are expected to strengthen Carradale Harbour's role as a key marine facility, supporting employment, economic activity and community life within Kintyre for years to come.”
