Argyll and Bute leads the way with Gaelic Gathering event

“Gaelic has deep roots here in Argyll and Bute through our place names, our music and tradition, it has shaped the identity of our communities and continues to enrich daily life across the region.”

These were the words from Councillor Luna Martin speaking from the fifth Gaelic Gathering organised by Argyll and Bute Council and held at the Corran Halls, Oban.

With representatives from communities and partner organisations, this unique event, held every two years brought together Gaelic speakers and learners with the aim of strengthening connections and supporting the Gaelic language across Argyll and Bute.

Argyll and Bute Council is the only council who organises a Gaelic Gathering. This year’s event was attended by Scottish Government representatives along with Bord na Gaidhlig, Fèisean nan Gaidheal and Comann nam Pàrant. The agenda included a youth panel where the audience heard how the language and culture is being promoted to younger audiences through dedicated social media channels. There were also conversations around how communities, schools and organisations best support young people to actively use Gaelic with confidence and pride in their everyday lives.

During the event, the Council outlined its commitment to nurturing and promoting Gaelic, as outlined in the Gaelic Language Plan. A public consultation will launch this summer to gather views on a new draft Gaelic Language Plan.

Councillor Luna Martin, Policy Lead for Climate Change, Biodiversity and Gaelic:

“Thanks to everyone who took the time to come to the Gaelic Gathering this year. As a Council, we are wholeheartedly committed to nurturing and promoting Gaelic, as outlined in our Gaelic Language Plan. Our vision is to ensure Gaelic continues to thrive and remains accessible to all. It was great to get together with those who have an interest in the language to share ideas.

It is inspiring to see the dedication of our partners and our young people. Their involvement is vital to the success of Gaelic and together, we can build a language community that is inclusive and resilient.”
