Work begins on Inveraray Avenue Screen 30 March

Further conservation work will begin on Inveraray Avenue Screen (the Arches) on Monday 30 March 2026.

The screen had render replaced in 2019, however, further maintenance work is now required to address various issues and to repair the surface finish of the new harling.

Specialist contractor Andrew Bradley Stonemason has been appointed to carry out the conservation and repair works and £120,000 has been allocated from Crown Estate funding, approved by the Council.

Scaffolding will go up within the first fortnight. Once in place, this will allow for the masonry inspection to begin, followed by a new lead-work capping and then repair of the harling. It will then be left for several weeks to dry. Only then will the final full re-painting of the Screen be carried out.

Work is expected to continue throughout the summer until August. During that time, all that can be done to ensure that disruption to neighbouring properties and the wider community is kept to a minimum.

Councillor Math Campbell Sturgess, Policy Lead for Business Development, said: “It is important that that we get this piece of work right. The Avenue Screen is an iconic piece of Inveraray’s built heritage. It plays a major role in the town’s highly original and recognisable frontage and that has to be preserved for the community and for the thousands of visitors that pass through its gates.”
