Support for young people across Argyll and Bute is continuing to deliver results, according to the Scottish Government’s latest Summary Statistics for Attainment.
At a meeting of the Community Services Committee, councillors heard that 94.8% of young people leaving school in 2024 moved into employment, training, further education or higher education. From thirty-two councils, Argyll and Bute Council remains in the top ten position for supporting learners into positive destinations.
Key highlights from the 2024 figures include:
- Level 5:
87% of school leavers achieved at least one Level 5 qualification—an improvement on last year’s 85.7%. - Level 6 (Higher):
62% achieved at least one Level 6 Qualification Higher or Higher Skills for Work. The A-D pass rate for Higher is 0.4% ahead of the national average. - Level 7 (Advanced Higher):
21.6% achieved a Level 7 award. While slightly lower than 2024’s figure, it remains a strong result.
A major focus of the council’s work continues to be supporting Care Experienced Young People (CEYP). This year’s figures show:
-
Level 4 literacy performance has improved and is above the national average.
-
Four of the last five years have seen gains in Level 4 literacy for CEYP.
-
Levels 5 and 6 literacy performance is slightly below last year’s figures and the national average.
The Council’s dedicated Care Experienced Education Team will continue to work directly with young people, schools, families and partner agencies to grow further positive outcomes.
Councillor Kieron Green, Policy Lead for Education:
“The latest attainment report from the Scottish Government is really positive and I’m proud to see Argyll and Bute Council holding that top ten position. We remain committed to supporting the aspirations of all our learners and helping ultimately is helping young people leave our education services in a better position than most in Scotland, to build the lives they want.
Across Argyll and Bute, our education teams continue to deliver a programme of support for our schools which is helping to drive improvement in attainment and achievement outcomes for our young people. I would like to thank education staff and young people for all their hard work.”
At the next Community Services Committee in May, councillors will hear directly from young people about their personal learning journeys, showcasing the wide range of pathways available across Argyll and Bute’s secondary schools.
