Public event – have your say on the future of Oban

Argyll and Bute Council is encouraging local residents, businesses, and community groups to come along to a public drop‑in event on Wednesday 11 March to help shape a long‑term vision for the future of the Oban area.

Oban has been identified as a key growth location within Argyll and Bute’s Local Development Plan 2 (LDP2). Its strategic position at the centre of the Tobermory‑to‑Dalmally growth corridor, strong transport connections, and comparatively younger, economically active population all contribute to its potential for sustainable expansion over the coming decades.

To support this work, the Council is developing an Oban Strategic Development Framework (OSDF) that will guide how the area evolves over the next 20 to 40 years. This framework will examine how best to support a growing population while safeguarding the natural environment. It will also consider what future infrastructure may be needed—from schools and transport links to housing and community facilities—and how to balance these needs with the protection of important landscape and environmental assets.

Initial discussions have already taken place with local community councils, and now the wider public is invited to get involved. The drop‑in event will take place at the Corran Halls, Oban, from 2pm to 8pm on 11 March, where attendees can learn more about the project, speak with the project team, and share their ideas.

A feedback form will be available at the event. For those unable to attend, all display materials will be published on the dedicated OSDF webpage from 11 March, along with an online version of the response form, which will remain open until 5pm on 20 March.

Council Leader, Councillor Jim Lynch, said:
“This is an opportunity for us to work together to shape a future that reflects the needs and aspirations of communities in and around the Oban area.

Hearing the views of people who live, and work here is a vital part of that process. By planning ahead, we can ensure growth is sustainable, well-managed and enhances the quality of life for everyone, both now and for future generations.

I would encourage anyone with an interest in the area to come along to the event, learn more and help shape the long-term direction for the community.”
