New Temporary School Closure Procedure approved

Councillors have approved a new Temporary Closure Procedure, providing a clear and consistent approach to decisions on the temporary closure of schools and Early Learning and Childcare settings.

The procedure reflects updated Scottish Government guidance and sets out how decisions will be made, including information gathering, engagement with communities, and ongoing review.

All temporary closures will be monitored closely and reviewed at least annually, with cases brought back to elected members if there is potential for reopening.

The procedure also strengthens early engagement with pupils, parents and communities, and ensures educational outcomes remain central to decisions.

It will be published on the Council website alongside up-to-date information on schools and nurseries currently affected, supporting transparency and public confidence.

Councillor Kieron Green, Policy Lead for Education, said:

“This procedure provides a clear and consistent approach to temporary school closures, in line with updated national guidance. It strengthens transparency, ensures regular review, and keeps the needs and voices of our young people at the heart of decision-making.”
