Argyll and Bute Council today welcomed the news that Bute has made the shortlist for UK Town of Culture.
Bute joins 14 other shortlisted towns after nearly 400 places across the UK entered the competition.
Work will now start to finalise the bid with an overall winner being chosen to become the UK Town of Culture 2028. The winner will receive a £3 million grant from the UK Government to develop a programme of culture for the local area.
Councillor Jim Lynch, Leader of Argyll and Bute Council:
"We are absolutely delighted that the Isle of Bute has been shortlisted for the UK's first Town of Culture competition. To be selected from almost 400 applications from across the UK is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the passion, creativity and pride of our community.
Bute has a rich cultural heritage, a thriving arts scene, internationally recognised events, stunning historic attractions and a strong tradition of community-led creativity. Our island's unique stories, landscapes and people make it a special place, and this recognition highlights the important contribution Bute makes to Scotland's and the UK's cultural life.”
