Planned essential maintenance works at Port Askaig

Argyll and Bute Council will be undertaking essential repair works to the ferry slip at Port Askaig, which serves the Islay to Jura ferry service.

The works are currently planned to begin during the week of 24 August 2026 and will involve removing and replacing damaged steel wear strips, together with associated concrete repair and resurfacing works.

The Jura ferry will operate via the linkspan for the duration of the project which will allow the works to be carried out safely and efficiently. The works have been carefully planned in consultation with CalMac and other stakeholders to minimise disruption while maintaining ferry connectivity between Islay and Jura.

The works will be undertaken by a council team and will be planned around the published CalMac sailing schedule wherever possible to ensure the continued operation of ferry services throughout the duration of the project.

Port Askaig is a busy working harbour, particularly during the summer season, and careful consideration has been given to the requirements of ferry operators, harbour users, local businesses, residents and visitors. Every effort will be made to complete the repairs safely, effectively and efficiently while maintaining normal harbour operations.

Works will include:

  • Removal of damaged steel wear strips;
  • Installation of new steel wear strips;
  • Localised concrete repair works;
  • Concrete resurfacing to areas of the ferry slip; and
  • Associated inspections and finishing works.

Ferry services are expected to operate as normal throughout the works, although harbour users may notice increased activity within the work area.

Argyll and Bute Council would like to thank ferry passengers, local residents, businesses and harbour users for their patience and co-operation while these essential infrastructure repairs are carried out.
