Council helps protect a small red star of the silver screen – and invites local locations to step into the spotlight.
The Council has helped save one of the area’s most photogenic little landmarks — a classic red phone box made famous by the iconic 1945 film I Know Where I’m Going!
The phone box, at Carsaig on Mull, has become something of a screen legend in its own right, attracting an international following.
Film fans visit Mull to explore locations seen in I Know Where I’m Going! with the visit to the post box being described by one as “always the most magical” and “always the most fun to visit”, thanks in part to its quirky position beside a waterfall.
When BT rationalisation plans risked the category B listed phone box being removed, the council’s Economic Development Service received appeals for help from film fans across the globe. After gathering data, the council successfully put forward the case for keeping the phone box – with fans already booking trips to Mull next year to see it.
Its story highlights the appeal of Argyll and Bute as a location for wide ranging films and TV productions.
The Council runs the Film in Argyll service to attract film, television and commercial productions to the area, supporting economic development, tourism and local business opportunities.
The service helps showcase the area to production companies looking for memorable locations, from dramatic landscapes, to coastal settings or rural towns.
Local people who have homes, buildings, land or other locations they would be happy to hire out for filming are encouraged to get in touch with the Council to register interest.
Councillor Jim Lynch, Leader and Policy Lead for Economic Development, said:
“The Carsaig phone box is a brilliant example of the power of film. A memorable location can inspire people to travel and spend time in our communities — sometimes decades after the cameras stopped rolling.
“Through Film in Argyll, we want to make it as easy as possible for productions to discover the incredible locations we have here — and for local people and businesses to benefit from the opportunities filming can bring.”
