Council agrees support for local heritage organisations

The Council has agreed financial support for two local heritage organisations, recognising the growing financial pressures facing cultural and community organisations and the contribution they make to local communities, the visitor economy and Argyll and Bute's heritage.

At its meeting today 20 August, the Policy and Resources Committee agreed a one-off contribution of £36,000 to Auchindrain Museum to help the attraction remain open until the end of October and continue essential conservation work over the winter months. In addition the Council will write to Historic Environment Scotland calling for the reinstatement of ongoing revenue support for the nationally significant museum.

The committee also agreed a funding increase of up to £20,000 for Kilmartin Museum for 2026/27, subject to the completion of a review confirming the level of support required. The increase will help meet rising costs associated with caring for and preserving artefacts.

The support for Auchindrain Museum will be funded through the Council's Priorities Investment Fund, while the additional support for Kilmartin Museum will be funded from the Council's 2026/27 Crown Estate allocation.

Policy Lead for Finance and Commercial Services, Councillor Ross Moreland, said:

"Across the country, heritage and cultural organisations are facing significant financial challenges. Rising operating costs mean it is becoming harder and harder to secure the investment needed to keep facilities and attractions open.

"The value of Auchindrain Museum and Kilmartin Museum, to our communities, our heritage and our local jobs and tourism economy, is clear. Finding funding for requests however is not easy, particularly at a time when local government finances remain under such enormous pressure.

"The investment needed came from two separate sources, providing a reminder that finding funding streams additional to council investments is often what will make it possible to deliver what communities want.

"This funding will provide these local organisations with additional stability while they continue to pursue longer-term funding solutions."

The committee also noted the position regarding a request for support from Cowal Highland Gathering. Due to the timing of the request and the event's planning timetable, it had not been possible for the Council to consider additional funding in advance of this year's event. The Council will continue discussions with organisers once the final financial position for the event is known.

Auchindrain Museum is recognised as a Category A listed historic township of national significance and provides a unique insight into traditional Highland rural life. Kilmartin Museum, located at the heart of Kilmartin Glen, plays a major role in preserving and interpreting one of Scotland's most important archaeological landscapes, while supporting tourism, education and community engagement.
