Budget gap, community asks, and the difference external funding makes – all on the agenda this week

Councillors will consider the latest budget outlook, community funding requests and the importance of attracting additional investment when the Policy and Resources Committee meets tomorrow.

The agenda includes a budget update report highlighting the scale of the financial challenge facing the council, with another £17 million+ budget gap forecast next year.

At the same time local communities’ need and wish for investment is on the agenda with reports setting out funding requests from local culture attractions, totalling more than £100,000, and a proposal for progressing a business case for a new leisure centre.

And at the same meeting, councillors will also consider updates on work being done to support housing, business and economic development, made possible with additional funding brought into the area.

Council Leader Councillor Jim Lynch said: “This agenda shows the reality of the council’s position.

Every day the council is delivering services we all need and use. The financial pressures facing local government are very real though and not going away.

At the same time, communities understandably continue to come forward with priorities and projects that matter to them.

“Securing more funding for Argyll and Bute continues to be vital. Additional investment delivers benefits for communities that just would not be possible otherwise.

“I look forward to considering the matters coming to committee.”

Progress on climate change activity, and on the Scotland’s Languages Act (2025) areas of linguistic significance, are among the other topics on the committee’s agenda.

Councillor Ross Moreland, Policy Lead for Finance and Commercial Services said:

“We have to be realistic and face funding facts. At the same time we have to remain ambitious for Argyll and Bute. The agenda for this one meeting alone is a reminder of how many different areas of life need council support and services.”
