Important travel information for Islay ferry passengers – 18 to 20 April

Due to essential maintenance works at Port Askaig, Argyll and Bute Council has today issued important advice for anyone travelling to or from Islay between Saturday 18 April and Monday 20 April.

To ensure public safety and the long-term viability of key ferry infrastructure, the council will carry out strengthening works to the hinged ramp and drawbridge (linkspan) at Port Askaig. These works have been identified as necessary as a result of routine inspections. They need to take place during a period of low tides to allow contractors safe access beneath the linkspan.

As a result, CalMac sailings between Islay and Kennacraig will temporarily divert to Port Ellen for the duration of the works. CalMac will confirm vessel deployment plans for the closure as soon as possible on the week of 13 April. Passengers are advised to check the CalMac website for up-to-date timetables and route information before travelling.

The council-run Jura ferry will continue to operate as normal from Port Askaig, with no changes to the existing timetable. While works are underway, Jura ferry traffic will use a different lane within the CalMac marshalling area. Temporary traffic management and signage will be in place to assist drivers and pedestrians.

In addition to the linkspan works, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), on behalf of Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL), will install a new electrical cable at Port Askaig over the same weekend. This forms part of wider enabling works for new CalMac vessels.

The long-stay car park at Port Askaig may close for a short period while works are carried out near the entrance. Any closures will be kept as brief as possible.

Argyll and Bute Council, CMAL and CalMac are working closely together to minimise disruption and would like to thank residents, businesses and visitors for their patience and cooperation during this essential work period.
