Freedom of Argyll and Bute – Royal Regiment of Scotland

On Saturday 20 September Lochgilphead will play host to the Royal Regiment of Scotland as they receive the Freedom of Argyll and Bute.

This will see over 100 soldiers marching through the town centre, with bayonets fixed and colours flying, to gather on the Front Green, where the community can witness the presentation of the Freedom scroll to Major-General Robin Lindsay CBE, the Regimental Colonel.

You’re very welcome to come to the Front Green on the day and be part of this historic occasion. You can also enjoy the spectacle of the march and the regimental pipes and drums as they make their way through Lochgilphead – and, if you’re very lucky, you may catch a glimpse of the Regiment’s famous mascot, the Shetland pony Corporal Cruachan IV, who will also be in attendance.

Traffic will be held up at points along the way for very short periods, so if you are travelling that day, please allow a little extra time.  Timings and locations of the march are set out below. Traffic will only be held up while the procession is under way at these points, and every effort will be made so travellers can get moving again as soon as possible afterwards.

The Regiment will set off at 1pm from MACPool on Oban Road before moving on to Bishopton Road and down Argyll Street, where, at around 1.15pm, they will cross the A83 to the Front Green for the presentation ceremony.

They will leave the Front Green just after 1.30pm, marching up Argyll Street to turn into Union Street and down Manse Brae, before rejoining the A83 briefly and proceeding up Whitegates Road towards Lochgilphead Joint Campus where the march will conclude.
