Project 20 plans for speed safety

Managing vehicle speed, and making roads safer is the work of the Council’s Project 20, currently looking at which roads in our area could be appropriate for a lower speed limit of 20mph.

Thursday’s (18 December) Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee were given an update of its progress.

Project 20 takes a starting point that even small reductions in speed can reduce the risk of fatal and serious collisions. While all 30mph roads are appropriate for a lower speed limit of 20mph, there may be some inconsistencies, which is why the Council will be consulting locally and taking this feedback into account.

Local engagement will, in the first instance, be with elected members and community councils and may be expanded to include other appropriate groups such as disability forums.

The project will work area by area, starting in Helensburgh and Lomond. Progress, and further information about the aims of the project, can be found on the Project 20 webpages.

Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders will be promoted to introduce the amended speed limits once the 20mph roads are agreed. These will be monitored and evaluated over 18 months before a final decision is taken whether to implement a permanent Traffic Regulation Order.

Project 20 works independently of the 20mph trial recently introduced by Transport Scotland on the A83 and A82 trunk roads.

Councillor John Armour, Policy Lead for Roads, Transport and Amenity Services: said

"I am of the opinion that consultation is important before we start – even if it means the project takes a bit longer. It will help us gather enough data to make informed decisions that we can use going forward. It is our chance to find the right speed for the right place and keeping people safe in our communities. If asked for your views, I would encourage you to feedback.”
