Council welcomes island funding

Argyll and Bute Council is one of six local authorities selected by the Scottish Government to share more than £800,000 to fund community led projects that will help to safeguard island economies and address depopulation.

The projects that will benefit in Argyll and Bute are:

  • Reopening of the Luing Slate Quarry and Shore Works Project, Luing - £20,000
  • Tobermory Worker Accommodation, Mull - £100,000
  • Bowmore Hall, Islay - £100,000
  • Gigha Keill Road (Isle of Gigha Heritage Trust), Gigha - £25,000
  • Gigha multi-purpose games area, Gigha - £20,000

This second tranche of funding brings total investment secured via the Scottish Government’s Islands programme to over £1 million in 2025/26 for projects in Argyll and Bute.

The island funding is part of the Scottish Government’s National Islands Plan which sets our 13 strategic objectives that aim to improve the quality of life for island communities.

The Council’s Policy Lead for Economic Development, Housing, Islands and Communities, Councillor Jim Lynch, said: “This funding is a fantastic boost for our islands and we’re delighted that Argyll and Bute has been chosen to benefit.

“These projects will make a real difference to our island communities by improving local facilities, protecting local heritage and helping our islands to thrive now and in the future.”
