Committee welcomes funding for new bus infrastructure

New bus stops, shelter upgrades, lighting improvements – all leading to better accessibility, safety and service quality – will be delivered over the coming months, thanks to funding from Transport Scotland’s Bus Infrastructure Fund.

The Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee agreed yesterday (18 December) that officers should continue to work with Transport Scotland, landowners and operators to deliver this vital programme of work.

The £414,000 funding will be used to:

  • Loch Fyne Oysters - Install new bus stops, shelters, and laybys at
  • West Loch Tarbert – new shelter installation and boarding area in existing Glasgow-bound layby.
  • Rural Bus Stop Lighting Programme – a scalable Argyll-wide programme of  solar powered timer or button activated light-up bus stop poles, flags and timetable cases.
  • Guildford Square – roof and seating upgrades to the two existing, bespoke Victorian style shelters in Guildford Square, Rothesay.
  • North Ledaig – new shelter installation adjacent to the Travelers Site.
  • Islay – new shelter installations at various locations.
  • Argyll-wide - programme of selective bus shelter refurbishments, to bring their appearance and functionality up to modern standards.
  • Bus stop pole replacement programme – primarily focused in the Cowal area to replace corroded infrastructure on safety and functionality grounds.

Councillor John Armour, Policy Lead for Roads, Transport and Amenity Services, said:

“This is very welcome funding. There is a tight timescale for delivering on the project, and a limited number of specialist suppliers in the country, but we are doing all we can to get the work done.

“We know how important public transport is to our communities in Argyll and Bute and these plans provide many of the safety and comfort features people have asked for. We can’t always do everything our communities ask of us, but when funding becomes available, we do all in our power to secure it and put it to the best possible use.”
