New funding agreed to support Royal National Mod

Argyll and Bute Council has agreed to additional financial backing for next year’s Royal National Mod (RNM) in Oban.

At a meeting of the full council today (Thursday), councillors approved funding of £25,000 for LiveArgyll to provide staffing for the use of the town’s Corran Halls for the duration of the 2024 celebrations.

Councillors also agreed additional support of £20,000 in response to a request from An Comunn for assistance in meeting the rising costs of staging the event.

The 2024 Mod will take place from 11 to 19 October in Oban - the location of the first ever event in 1892.

Council Leader Councillor Robin Currie said: “Our ongoing support for the Royal National Mod is in recognition of the event’s cultural and educational significance, in particular the part it plays in ensuring the continued development of the Gaelic language and the provision of local Mods.

“I am certain that the new funding we have agreed, which is in addition to the existing £120,000 of support which we already pledged to the Mod, will be welcomed by our Gaelic communities.”
