“People in Argyll and Bute have responded with overwhelming kindness to the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.”
Councillor Robin Currie, Leader of Argyll and Bute Council has paid tribute to communities across the area who are helping Ukrainians who are fleeing the war. Communities are showing their support by collecting donations of clothing and other vital supplies and arranging transport to Europe.
He said: “We are all sickened, saddened and horrified by what we are seeing on the news at the moment, by what the Ukrainian people are going through. It is difficult to know what to do in these circumstances. But the people of Argyll and Bute have been magnificent - sharing their famous sense of community spirit with strangers across the world.
“They have pulled together and organised tremendous amounts of supplies which will be taken straight to those who need it. They have and continue to be very generous in donating to the national appeals providing support for Ukraine.
“The scenes of Ukrainian people who are having to leave their homes and families behind are heartbreaking. They have spoken of their need to depend upon the kindness of strangers. I am humbled by the overwhelming kindness that Argyll and Bute has shown to others in these very dark times.”
Councillor Currie confirmed that he had written to Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UK and Consul General in Scotland to express his support for the Ukrainian people at this time. He also advised that, with the agreement of the Provost of Argyll and Bute, Councillor David Kinniburgh, arrangements are in hand for Ukrainian flags to be flown on some council flagpoles for a period, to show support.
“Argyll and Bute Council stands ready to help and play our part in the national effort to support the Ukrainian people. We will work with other agencies on a national and local basis, wherever it is possible, to help people in these very desperate circumstances.”
