ScotRail’s new Highland Explorer, active travel carriage has been added to the West Highland Line to Oban making it easier for visitors to store bikes and hiking equipment and leave the car at home.
The Highland Explorer is the first five of ScotRail’s Class 153’s to be fitted out and the first of its type in the UK.
The service will operate from Glasgow to Oban from today twice daily. Passengers can book cycle space from today, using the form on ScotRail’s website https://www.scotrail.co.uk/scotrail-highland-explorer.
From the 7 August, passengers can book online, by phone or at ticket offices.
Argyll and Bute Council, BID4Oban, Argyll and the Isles Tourism Cooperative (AITC), Sustrans and ScotRail have worked together for two years to optimise the introduction of the new carriages and build on the increase in cycling tourism in Scotland – a trend which has increased even further during the pandemic.

With funding from NatureScot, AITC commissioned Markus Stitz to devise a series of gravel loops and routes that can be enjoyed from the stations travelling up to Oban. Markus previously developed the 655km Wild About Argyll Bike Packing Trail across Argyll mainland in 2018 http://bikepackingscotland.com/argyll/ and will now be creating an island trail linking to the new adventure carriage arriving in Oban and funded by Calmac.
