Council Recipe For Success At Oban Beach Cafe

Argyll and Bute Council has announced that its award-winning Catering Service team is taking over the running of the Ocean Explorer café at the Scottish Association For Marine Science (SAMS) building in Oban.

The re-named Beach Café is now run by the Council’s catering service which already delivers a number of catering facilities across Argyll and Bute, including providing 6,000 school meals per day to more than 80 primary and secondary schools and 56 early years settings.

The service also operates two successful commercial catering ventures at Kilmory Staff Restaurant in Lochgilphead and The Café at Helensburgh and Lomond Civic Centre.

The new Beach Café menu will offer a wide range of freshly prepared healthy meals and snacks made from locally sourced produce, catering for SAMS visitors, students, staff, tourists and conference delegates.

The service will also promote events and initiatives in support of campus activities as well as providing special seasonal menus to mark holidays and celebrations.

Councillor Alastair Redman, Policy Lead, Business, Regeneration and Commercial Development:

“The success of our catering team in winning the contract to run the new Beach Café at SAMS is well-deserved recognition for the high quality of the services they already deliver across Argyll and Bute.

“This latest development will see the team further expand their commitment to providing healthy, locally produced meals at a venue which plays a very significant role in the local community in Oban.”

Argyll and Bute Council’s award-winning Catering Service holds a number of quality standards including ISO 9001:2015 Accreditation and its Kilmory staff restaurant has received a Healthy Living Plus Award, highlighting the Council’s commitment to healthy food choices.

The Scottish Association for Marine Science is Scotland’s largest and oldest independent marine science organisation, delivering marine science for a productive and sustainably managed marine environment through innovative research, education and engagement with society.

The Council is currently advertising for a Catering Manager and Catering Assistant for the Beach Café. Closing date for applications is 5 August 2021.
