Dervaig wins top reading award

Congratulations to Dervaig Primary School on winning the Children's Writers and Illustrators Group (CWIG) Award for Reading for Pleasure.

Children's author, Barbara Henderson, chose Dervaig to receive the prestigious award for the its 'collective enthusiasm for reading and the way the school adapted its approach to each individual child, celebrating their creativity'.

Ms Henderson said: “The individual attention to each child in this small rural island school was evident from my first contact. This was not simply an arrangement for an author visit - there was a genuine, enthusiastic exchange of many emails about how the children had engaged with my book, The Siege of Caerlaverock.

“I was so impressed with their collective enthusiasm for reading and the way the school adapted its approach to each individual child, celebrating their creativity. Ms Evans is a great example of a teacher who goes the extra mile, and then some, to give her pupils a fantastic experience, thinking out of the box and keeping in touch with a wealth of ideas.

“I really liked how the class engaged in practical book-inspired outdoor learning too, likeshooting medieval catapults, which they shared with me.They also wrote me a really detailed and lovely book mail after the visit!
