What a DHP cannot cover

DHPs can’t cover arrears, sanctions or times when no eligible housing costs are in payment.

The following is a list of the most common examples:

  • Increases in rent due to outstanding rent arrears at the current or previous property.
  • Deductions from Housing Benefit or Universal Credit due to previously overpaid benefits.
  • Deductions from Universal Credit due to existing debts, advance payments or hardship payments.
  • Deductions from Universal Credit for other benefits received, such as Carer’s Allowance or Employment Support Allowance.
  • Deductions from benefit due to sanctions.
  • Any period where there is no Housing Benefit or Universal Credit Housing Costs in payment.
