Argyll and Bute Registrars have access to a vast amount of records and information to assist you in your family research.

Genealogy is the study of the history and descent of a family/families usually beginning with a living person tracing their ancestors. Whether you are just starting out or have made a good start on your family history journey, Argyll and Bute Registrars have access to a vast amount of records and information to assist you in your research.

Registration in Scotland became compulsory in 1855 and Argyll and Bute Registrars have online access to birth, death and marriage records from 1855 to the present day for the whole of Scotland. They also have access to Census Returns from 1841-1901 which give additional information on household members including age, marital status and occupation. Before the introduction of compulsory registration local Church of Scotland ministers recorded births and baptisms, proclamations of banns and marriages and deaths and burials in the Old Parish Records. These records aren’t complete but can still be useful for obtaining further information from 1553-1854.

Before arranging an appointment with one of our experienced registrars it would be beneficial for you to collate any information you already have.

After exhausting the registers, Old Parish Records and Census returns you may want to look even further into your family’s past. LiveArgyll’s Archives Service have a dedicated Family History section in their Kilmory search room.
