Access to the records
You can search the records in the following ways:
- Online using theScotlands People website
- All registration offices in Argyll and Bute are computerised and have access to the Scotlands People website. To visit a registration office in person, an appointment should be arranged in advance. Argyll and Bute registration offices do not have facilities for visitors to search records themself, however there are research centres throughout Scotland.Contact Argyll and Bute Registrars
- Those wishing to carry out their own research can also access a wider range of records in Edinburgh at the:ScotlandsPeople Visitor Centre
The information we are able to provide regarding genealogical research is as follows:
- Old Parish Register Images 1553 to 1854 - Births, Marriages and Deaths
- Census Images 1841 - 1911
- Birth Images 1855 to date - recent records are currently being added
- Death Images 1855 to date - recent records are currently being added
- Marriage Images 1855 to date - recent records are currently being added
- Civil Partnership Indexes from 2005 - date - recent records are currently being added
Fees
(correct as of 1st April 2026)
To help you with your family history research, the Registrar can offer you the following:-
- A specific search - this is a search for a particular entry of Births, Deaths or Marriages. The fee for this is £5.00 for each period of 5 years.
- An assisted general search - a registrar assisted search of the records relating to your family tree costing £15.00 per hour or part of and no guarantee that information will be found.
- Certified extracts of entries for the current certificate fee of £10.00 (where a search fee has been paid)

Archives
To further assist your research you may also want to contact the Local Archivist. Records available are These include Registers of Electors, Valuation Rolls, poor relief records, school admission registers and estate records. ContactLiveArgyll Archivist
Burial records
Argyll and Bute Council also hold the burial records for cemeteries within Argyll and Bute. Please contact us to arrange a search or use our online enquiry form. A search fee may apply.
