The Provost's Fund

The Provost’s Fund, was set up in 1920 to support those who had served in the 1914-19 European War, and their families. Today, anyone in need, living in Bute, can apply to the fund.

The Provost’s Fund was instituted by Provost James McMillan OBE to commemorate the visit of King George V, Queen Mary and Princess Mary to Rothesay on 11th July 1920, and was put in place to provide assistance to Soldiers and Sailors who served in the European War 1914-19, or any Wives and Dependants of any Soldiers and Sailors who lost their lives in the said War.

Nowadays, the fund is administered by the Bute and Cowal Area Committee, and benefits from the fund can be paid out to the deserving poor of the Burgh of Rothesay. Applications to the fund must be made in November each year, and grants are paid out in December.

The closing date for applications for 2023 was 20th November 2023.
