Local Living
Local living provides people with the opportunity to meet the majority of their daily needs within a reasonable distance of their home.
20-minute Neighbourhoods
The 20-minute neighbourhood concept is one method of supporting local living. The 20-minute neighbourhoods concept aims to provide access to the majority of daily needs within a 20-minute walk, wheel or cycle.
Argyll and Bute Council’s local living (20‑minute neighbourhood) tool has been developed to support a place-based approach to planning, recognising the area’s distinctive settlement pattern of small towns, villages and dispersed rural communities.
The tool uses a network-based approach to define local living areas across Argyll and Bute. These reflect realistic travel patterns in the region where journey times and transport options differ significantly from urban areas across Scotland where the 20-minute neighbourhood method is more applicable. The tool identifies a number of facilities and services across Argyll and Bute using five overarching categories: Employment and Commercial, Healthcare, Education and Childcare, Leisure and Recreation, and Sustainable Transport.
The tool includes an interactive map that allows communities to ascertain if the settlement they live, work, or play in meets the principles of a 20-minute neighbourhood. A report showing each of the network areas and a summary of the services and facilities available within them can be found here Local Living and 20-minute Neighbourhoods Report
