There are three main visa schemes which make up the Ukraine Schemes. The first is Homes for Ukraine which includes the Scottish Government’s Super Sponsor Scheme. The second is the Ukraine Family Scheme which was the first scheme to be announced and the third is the Ukraine Extension Scheme. The Scottish Super Sponsor Scheme has been paused to new applicants since July 2022. The Ukraine Extension Scheme closed to new applications in May 2024 for all but children born to Ukraine scheme visa holders. In February 2024, the Family Scheme closed and at the same time the visa length for Homes for Ukraine was reduced from 3 years to 18 months.
Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme
The Ukraine Permission Extension (UPE) Scheme was launched on 4 February 2025.
This scheme allows anybody who was previously granted permission through a different Ukrainian visa scheme to extend their stay in the UK for up to 18 months.
When making the application you must make sure you:
- are in the UK
- have 28 days or less remaining on your current Ukrainian visa

In early September 2025, the UK Government announced a further 24-month extension to the program, details of which will be published later.
Ukrainian Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) should be kept, even after their expiry date and the creation of an online eVisa, because they are required to apply for the Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme and may be needed to prove immigration status when traveling in or out of the UK.
