Oban businessman is on the road to success
A former manager at Glensanda Quarry who was made redundant has set up his own luxury car hire firm.
Ronald MacMillan, 55, worked at the quarry for over 24 years, but when he experienced redundancy, he decided to become his own boss. With support from Argyll and Bute Council’s Business Gateway, Ronald founded Oban Executive Car Hire, late last year.
Ronald said: “I had the idea for a while so I used some of my redundancy money to buy a black Mercedes. I made the decision to set up in October, so that by the time the tourist season kicks in, I would be properly established and in a strong position. Initially, I concentrated on setting up a Facebook page for my business and letting establishments, such as hotels, in the area know about me. Then, unexpectedly, I began to get work through the local funeral parlours. Although it was completely unexpected, this has allowed me to form a solid base for the business and opened up other areas such as weddings. I’ve also made connections with business people in America who will be visiting Oban in the summer.
“Business Gateway has been a great help and support from the beginning. Discussing my plans with my adviser gave me a confidence boost. With no previous experience of setting up a business, being able to access expert advice and help on how to establish my business was crucial. Business Gateway also pointed me in the right direction when it came to accessing funding, and offered me much needed support on how to use Social Media effectively.”
Angela Vernel, the Business Gateway adviser who supported Ronald said: “Ronald was enthusiastic and passionate about his idea but had no experience in setting up a business. I helped him focus on a few key areas and I’m delighted that he has seen good results already”
