Moves to make Dunoon and Bute more friendly for walking and cycling

Argyll and Bute Council is inviting residents of Bute and Dunoon to give their views on the development of new walking and cycling routes.

A drop-in event is being held on Wednesday 20 March at The Hub (the old Clydesdale Bank), 17 High Street, Rothesay between 11am and 7pm. And on Thursday 21 March, a separate event will be held at the Queens Hall in Dunoon from 11am to 7pm.

The proposed Rothesay route between the ferry terminal and Rothesay Joint Campus, along High Street and Townhead, was identified as needing improvement following the intensive consultation carried out by the council and partners as part of the Remaking Rothesay Project. Feedback showed the route was well-used and important to many day-to-day journeys, and that improvements would benefit those traveling by bike, by foot, with prams or buggies or by wheelchair or mobility scooter.

And the proposed Dunoon route between Dunoon Pier and Sandbank and Dunoon Pier and Hunters Quay, along Argyll Street and Alexandra Parade, were identified as needing improvement following the intensive consultation carried out by the Council and partners as part of the ThinkDunoon Project.

Work has been carried out to ascertain what options there are for improving the routes and the council is inviting the public to get involved in identifying what will work best for them.

As well as the drop-in events, interactive websites for each proposal have been set up allowing you to have your say online. The Rothesay site is at www.rothesayactivetravelmap.commonplace.is and the Dunoon website is available at www.dunoonactivetravelmap.commonplace.is

Aileen Morton, leader of Argyll and Bute Council and Policy Lead for Economic Development, said: “As a council, we are committed to doing what we can to promote active and healthy living. I would encourage residents of Bute and Dunoon to attend the drop-in events on 20 and 21 March, or log on to the websites, and have their say on these proposals.”

Dave Keane, Community Links Manager for Sustrans Scotland, added: “We’re pleased to be involved in a range of projects, providing support and advice to make it easier for people to travel around Bute and Rothesay. We look forward to working with the community and council to develop more walking, cycling and wheeling infrastructure on the island in years to come.”
