Argyll business has a sparkling future

A Cardross jewellery maker has seen a significant increase of sales after boosting its online presence.

While the business primarily deals in trade sales, with help from Argyll and Bute Council’s Business Gateway service the company has embraced new marketing strategies to include social media, which has led to a rise in retail sales.

The award winning business employs eight jewellery makers and after attending a trade show in Munich for the last two years, has gained customers in Germany, Italy, Ireland and Poland.

Linda Scott, who set up the business, is a design graduate of Glasgow School of Art and was named the British Jewellery Association’s Designer of the Year 2012.

She said: “I’ve been making jewellery for a long time and working and living in such a beautiful part of Scotland is one of my main inspirations for our collections. For a long time we concentrated on trade customers throughout the UK, including John Lewis and other galleries and shops. Attending the international trade fair in Munich has been a huge success for our business and we have gained many customers from around Europe this way.

“But last year we felt the time had come to try and increase our retail sales so that both areas of the business were growing. Our local Business Gateway office has been a great help and the advice on incorporating social media into our marketing strategy continues to be a huge success. We were granted a Business Gateway Plus grant which allowed us to do this, as well as rebrand. We are in a great position to push on now and hopefully grow throughout the rest of the year.”

Ann Scott, Business Gateway adviser, Business Gateway added: “Linda Macdonald Jewellery is an example of a successful company based in a rural area that can use the internet to sell around the world. The Business Gateway Plus grant  helped them to  create a new marketing strategy and take advantage of the opportunities social media channels offer, to grow the business further.”
