Why this is a good design

The challenge on this project was to accommodate the space required for a heritage centre, yet being sympathetic to the more intimate scale of traditional buildings on the island, including a thatched cottage close by, and the wider, low rise rolling landscape, all of which is within a National Scenic Area.  The architects’ solution is for a shallow pitched, turf roof building that provides a deceptive amount of space, to satisfy the community aspirations for a spacious focal point on the island, without generating significant visual impacts that may be associated with an alternative design.  The use of natural materials for the walls and roof greatly assist the integration of this building into the site and ties in with the ethos of "green" design.
