Why this is a good design
Originally built as a drill hall in 1871, the renovation of the hall provided an opportunity to provide something special, combined with the challenge of delivering it on a historic site within the Easdale Conservation Area. The main pyramidal roof with central ships mast column has been retained, and modern single storey sweeping glazed additions have been made along the frontage of the site, inviting people into the community space. The combination of modern modest additions with the historic structure adds to the drama of the building, setting it out as a captivating space for new arrivals to the island, and as a readily identifiable location for the community to gather and host a range of events.
