The Provost of Argyll and Bute Council has congratulated a trio from Lochgilphead Resource Centre who did the area proud when they came home with a collection of medals from the Special Olympics.

Flora Currie, Campbell Ferguson and Iain Macdougall were part of the Boccia team representing Scotland West at this year’s event in Sheffield, along with teams from Glasgow and Paisley.

Over 1,200 athletes from across Scotland, England and Wales participated in a series of hard fought competitions in 20 sports at the Ponds Forge Arena.

The first two days saw the Mid Argyll group compete in five different competitions where they all excelled expectations, producing their best form at just the right time. Their efforts paid off and saw Iain take gold, Campbell pick up silver, and Flora get the bronze.

However, it was at the end of a truly hard week that the West Scotland squad showed their skill, concentration and perseverance to pit their strengths against the best teams from Tayside, Dumfries, Yorkshire and Humberside, South East England, Northern Region, Greater London and the Midlands.

The three teams from the squad each competed in different competitions, coming away the team gold, team silver and a very close team fourth.

Argyll and Bute Council’s Provost, Councillor Len Scoullar said: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Scotland West team for their outstanding achievements. They are an inspiration and I am very proud of each one of them. They have put Lochgilphead on the map and I wish them every success in the future with the sport.”
