Argyll and Bute Council’s trading standards team has received a number of reports of rogue traders operating in the Campbeltown area.
Generally, it appears that they are giving quotes for plastering, roofing, pointing and chimney repairs but the final bill is substantially higher. They justify the inflated price by stating that they found additional problems.
Customers are finding that the quality of the work is poor and sometimes unnecessary.
The council is urging consumers to report any traders knocking on doors looking for work to contact trading standards on 01546 602127. Doorstep traders should provide consumers with written agreements quoting the price, work to be carried out, full name and address and a notice of your cancellation rights.
We would strongly advise consumers to ask for written estimates for the works required and any references before agreeing and to take advantage of the legal seven day cooling off period to allow time to consider any proposed work and to get other estimates.
If you feel you have been the victim of these rogue traders you should get in touch with trading standards. You can also call Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.
If you feel physically threatened by rogue traders in your home you should contact the police immediately.
